Privacy policy
In short: we keep only what the account and leaderboard need: how you sign in, your nickname, your results as numbers and your groups. We don't store your speech text or recordings on our server. No ads, no analytics, no tracking.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is Debaterr's creator, Atvars Grasmanis (Latvia). For privacy questions write to debaterr.app@gmail.com.
2. What data we process
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Signing in with email: your email address. Signing in with Google or Apple: the account identifier, email, and the name and profile picture address that Google or Apple share when you sign in. | So you can sign in and recover your account. We don't show your name or picture in the app or share them with anyone. |
| Nickname | To show you on the leaderboard. Other users see only your nickname and points. If you turn on “Private account” in settings, others don't see you on leaderboards. |
| Results: points, difficulty, topic, speech length, word count, number of filler words, foreign words and language mistakes (and which filler words), date | Leaderboard and statistics on all your devices |
| Recording sessions (start time, planned length) and speaking time per day | The daily limit (7 minutes) and protection against abuse |
| Groups you are in and groups you created; attempts to join a group | Group leaderboards; protection against guessing group codes |
| Consent to the privacy policy and to news emails, with dates; if you agree to news, your email on the news list | To prove consent and send news only to people who want it |
| Age confirmation: the date you confirmed you are at least 13. The birth month and year you enter are checked only on your phone and are not stored. | So that only people aged 13 or older use Debaterr |
| Your consent to your voice and speech text being sent to ElevenLabs and Anthropic, with its date | To prove we told you clearly before your first speech and you agreed |
| Users you have blocked | So they don't appear on your leaderboards |
| Reports about offensive nicknames or group names: who reported, what, the reason, date and decision. We never reveal the reporter to the other user. | To review reports, protect users and prevent abusive reporting (EU Digital Services Act) |
| Notification subscription (only if you turn on “Streak reminders”) | To remind you in the evening that your speaking streak is about to end |
| Technical logs: IP address, browser or device type, request time (in sign-in and server logs) | Security, fixing errors and protection against attacks |
3. Speech recordings and text
Before your first speech the app briefly explains all of this and asks for your consent. You can't speak without it, because your speech can't be graded without these services.
- While you speak, your voice is streamed to ElevenLabs for speech recognition, and the text comes back to your phone. We don't record or store the audio. Under its privacy policy ElevenLabs may keep audio and text for a while to improve its services, fix errors and keep them secure. So please don't say sensitive information about yourself or others while speaking.
- After the speech, the text is sent briefly to our server to calculate your leaderboard score and, if grading is on, to Anthropic (Claude) to grade topic coverage and structure. Before sending it to Anthropic we automatically replace email addresses, phone numbers, personal ID numbers and links in the text. The text is not stored: only the numbers listed in section 2 stay on the server.
- Your speech history with the text is kept only on your phone until you delete it.
4. Legal basis
- Providing the service (GDPR art. 6(1)(b)): account, results, leaderboard, groups, speech recognition and grading.
- Legitimate interests (GDPR art. 6(1)(f)): the daily limit, technical logs, reviewing reports and protection against abuse.
- Consent (GDPR art. 6(1)(a)): news emails and streak reminders. You can withdraw consent at any time in settings.
5. Age
Debaterr is only for people aged 13 or older. Before an account is created we ask for your birth month and year. If you are under 13, no account is created and no data is stored; if an account already existed, it is deleted immediately. If we learn that an account is used by a child under 13, we delete it. Parents or guardians can ask us at any time to delete a child's account or to tell them what data we hold, by writing to the contact in section 1.
6. Who else processes data (processors)
- Supabase: database and sign-in. Data is stored in Switzerland (Zurich), which the European Commission recognises as providing an adequate level of data protection.
- Netlify: website and server functions (including server logs).
- ElevenLabs: speech recognition (voice audio). How it stores and uses data: ElevenLabs privacy policy.
- Anthropic: grading the content of the speech (speech text), if grading is on.
- Brevo: sending emails (sign-in codes and, if you agreed, news).
- Cloudflare (Turnstile): checking that you're not a robot when you request a sign-in code (processes technical data about your browser and IP address, without advertising cookies).
- Google and Apple: sign-in, if you choose “Continue with Google” or “Continue with Apple”.
- Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play): downloading and updating the app, and payments if paid features are added in the future. This data is processed under Apple's and Google's privacy policies; we receive only aggregated statistics and information about purchases.
- Your device's notification service (e.g. Google or Apple): only if you turn on streak reminders.
Some processors (Netlify, ElevenLabs, Anthropic, Google, Apple) may also process data outside the EU, for example in the USA; in that case the safeguards required by the GDPR are used (the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses) together with data processing agreements. We don't sell data or share it with advertisers.
7. How long we keep data
We keep account data while you have an account. If you delete your account (Settings → Delete account), your account, nickname, results, recording sessions, your groups, memberships in other groups, notification subscription, blocked users and your email on the news list are permanently deleted. You can also delete your account without the app: see account deletion. We keep reports for no longer than one year; if the reporter deletes their account, the report no longer shows who reported. Processors keep technical logs for a short time under their own terms.
8. Your rights
You have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, restrict its processing, receive it in a portable format and object to processing. Write to the contact in section 1 and we will reply within one month. If you believe your rights have been violated, you can complain to the Latvian Data State Inspectorate (Datu valsts inspekcija) or the data protection authority in your country.
9. Cookies and device storage
Debaterr uses only necessary storage: local storage for settings, your speech history on the device and your sign-in session. We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, so no separate consent is needed.
10. Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and tell you about important changes in the app. If the English and Latvian versions differ, the Latvian version prevails.
